Classes will be held from 8AM-9AM
at Beth Israel on Sunday mornings
when the Rabbi is in town.

Weather conditions have made it impossible for the Rabbi to visit
the weekend of February 5-7.
She will be in contact with enrolled students to continue the class work.

The Training Institute will consist of nine classes covering topics such as leading Shabbat prayers, chanting Torah and Haftarah, and giving talks on Jewish subjects of interest. The class will include "homework" in the form of supplemental  CD's and websites to reinforce what we learn in class.  These classes are for both those interested in leading services and those who want to improve their synagogue skills. Those who are interested in leading services are expected  to attend both services and class on a regular basis as well as pass a proficiency "test" before leading/reading. Don't be nervous - my tests always include chocolate and there is no limit to how many times one can "take the test." Those only interested in giving a talk do not have to attend all the classes, but do need to attend services on a regular basis and are strongly encouraged to work with the Rabbi on the talk.

The breakdown of classes is the following:

  • 1/24 Torah Trope I (Trope is the code for reading the melody of a Torah reading)
  • 2/7  Torah Trope II
  • 2/21 Haftarah Trope I
  • 2/28 Haftarah Trope II
  • 3/21 Kabbalat Shabbat
  • 4/11 Maariv  - Shabbat Evening Service
  • 4/25 Pesukei D'Zimrah and Shacharit (Warm up songs and Shabbat morning service)
  • 5/16 Gabbaing a Torah Service (running a Torah service) and Shabbat Musaf ("Additional" Shabbat Service)
  • 5/23 Giving a talk or leading a discussion on a Jewish topic of interest

Note that reading Hebrew, while not a prerequisite for attending the course, will not be covered in the series of classes.
